Green Jobs

One of the most important functions of the Metro 1 Green Building Resource Center is to create local jobs and provide adequate training to those interested in the green building industry. The M1 GBRC will achieve this by:

  • Training on weatherization techniques. The Department of Energy states that ‘By reducing the energy bills of low-income families instead of offering aid, weatherization reduces dependency and liberates these funds for spending on more pressing family issues. On average, weatherization reduces heating bills by 32% and overall energy bills by about $350 per year at current prices. This spending, in turn, spurs low-income communities toward job growth and economic development’
  • Training for office and home efficiency audits, creating jobs for efficiency auditors in conjunction with reducing the impacts associated with the environment from inefficient uses of energy, water, etc in office and homes.
  • Training for green collar jobs, such as solar panel installers, green roof installation and maintenance, ‘green’ operations, cleaning and management.
  • Educating the real estate professional community on green building, providing them the tools for value added services. This education/knowledge will be passed on to their clients, who will in turn manage, develop, purchase and lease more efficient properties.
  • Pairing up service and product suppliers with contractors, developers and consumers in need of the service or product – creating jobs by installations, sales, product support, etc.
  • Providing training for LEED accreditation This accreditation enables an individual to facilitate the rating of buildings with the various LEED systems.
  • Seminars geared towards sustainable practices and green building, such as our “Funding Green Buildings” seminar series.

The Metro 1 GBRC is currently scouting for qualified individuals to instruct on weatherization techniques, best management practices for operations and building management, solar installation and maintenance, green roof installation and maintenance and efficiency auditing for homes and businesses. If you feel you have the credentials and expertise to instruct on any of the above topics, please contact Susie Glass at sglass@metro1gbrc.org or call 305.571.9991.
